Speedway, Ind. – The triple header race weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Abel motorsports in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires is complete. Jacob Abel earned two top-10 finishes, just barely missing out on a pair of top-fives.
The weekend got off to a fast start for Abel and the 51 team, as they finished the first session eighth, only two-tenths off of first place. From there the team worked on finding a set-up that would work well in the heat.
Race 1 showed the maturity that 20-year-old Jacob Abel has, by avoiding wrecks that would have surely ended his race early. Instead, Jacob was able to run consistent laps and gain knowledge for the rest of the week. Race 1 ended up with the No. 51 Abel Construction/Crosley Brands car in sixth, one spot shy of a top-five.
Race 2 was very much a copy of race 1, with Jacob Abel having to do his best wreck avoidance and protect the car. He did just that, avoiding all of the accidents to bring the car home in seventh place.
Race 3 was an unfortunate ending to the weekend for the Abel Motorsports team as a mechanical issue out of the teams control took them out of contention for a top finish. Jacob Abel had to pit for repairs putting him three laps down from the lead lap car, ultimately earning him an 11th-place finish.
“Indy was definitely a difficult homecoming weekend for us. We had flashes of pace throughout the weekend and a couple of good recoveries in races 1 and 2, but not exactly the results we were hoping for. The good news is that we are already at Lucas Oil Raceway next week and have a shot for redemption,” said Jacob Abel.
The team now moves on to the first of two oval events of the 2021 season, this time at the Lucas Oil Raceway for the Carb Night Classic. Abel heads into the .686-mile track sitting 10th in the points, but optimistic for a good finish.
