St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing had a near perfect weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires' Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Indianapolis. The team left the famed track with two wins and two podium finishes.
In Race 1, Canadian Scott Hargrove picked up his first win of the season while American Neil Alberico finished on the podium. Hargrove started second and Alberico started eighth, but after a hectic opening lap, the two were 1-2.
The drivers battled throughout the race that was slowed by three cautions and combined to lead all 19 laps. But in the end, Hargrove bested his teammate, claiming the first victory of the season for the team. Alberico finished third.
The next day, the Cape duo picked up where they left off. After starting second, Hargrove made his move on Lap 1 and never looked back. Alberico had a bit of a more difficult race. After starting seventh, he fell to the back of the field on the opening lap. Undeterred, he worked his way through the field to finish second, his best result of the season.
“What a great weekend,” said team owner Dominic Cape. “To have our first Pro Mazda wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a great feeling – we couldn’t have asked more from our drivers and our crew.”
With his two victories, Hargrove moved within five points of series points leader Spencer Pigot (157-152). Alberico also improved his points standings; he is now fourth, only two points back from third. The team is second, only eight points behind Juncos Racing.
The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires heads next to Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind., as part of the traditional “Night Before the 500" festivities on Saturday, May 25.
