Team Pelfrey gets you up to speed with Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires driver #81 Spencer Pigot
Q: What do you do in your training to prepare for this level of racing?
A: I get my workouts from PitFit Training, a company based out of Indianapolis (pitfit.com). They send me my workouts every day, which consist mainly of cardio workouts and upper body strength training, that I do at my local gym. The workouts are four to five times a week, about an hour and a half per day.
Q: You drove the Pro Mazda car last year at the test in Indianapolis and now have a couple of tests this year under your belt. What did you find are the big differences between the Pro Mazda car and the USF2000 car?
A: I would say the biggest differences are the gearbox and the brakes. The USF2000 car has a four-speed, H-pattern gearbox, kind of old school. The Pro Mazda car has a six-speed, paddle-shift gearbox, which makes it much easier to go through the gears. You can brake deeper with the Pro Mazda car, even though you are reaching higher speeds, because it has more aerodynamic downforce.
Q: Do you have any pre-race rituals?
A: No, not really. I like to stay to myself beforehand to concentrate on the race or the session coming up.
Q: What is the best moment you have had in racing so far?
A: My best moment was winning in Indy this past year at the Night Before the 500 race; to win in Indy and then get introduced before the crowd at the Speedway the next morning before the race. Hopefully I will be able to do it again this year and make an even better memory!
Q: What is your favorite city or place you have traveled to?
A: I went go karting in Germany a few years ago. After the karting, we traveled from Germany to Spain. On the way we stopped in Monaco for a few hours. We went around the grand prix track on motor scooters while we were there. That is definitely the coolest track.
Q: Who is your biggest role model?
A: My dad (Barry) has always helped me a lot in racing and has always been there for me. He used to race himself and has been around the business; I definitely look up to him. Will Power is the driver I look up to right now. I watch him and how he approaches the weekend and how he drives.
Q: If you weren't racing, what would you be doing?
A: I would probably still be racing something. I started out racing dirt bikes, although my mom was not a big fan of that. If not racing cars, I would do the normal college experience, majoring in something along the lines of mechanical engineering or business, and race dirt bikes for fun.
