ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. – The first two rounds of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires this weekend on the streets of St. Petersburg saw Spencer Pigot pick up exactly where he left off at the recent preseason Cooper Tires Winterfest. On top of the pack.
The rising American talent once again was fastest in every single session aboard the #7 Doug Mockett & Company/Rising Star Racing/
Vitamin-DPro App/California Scents/OMP car fielded by Juncos Racing. He started from the pole in both races and led from flag to flag on each occasion to claim a maximum points haul from the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
“I couldn't be happier with how the first weekend of the season went,” said Pigot. “We worked really hard as a team to prepare for St. Pete and it paid off. To top every session and win both races is a great start for me.”
Pigot set the balling rolling by posting the quickest times in both practice sessions on Friday. He was fastest in qualifying on Saturday morning, too, to secure the pole position – and a coveted championship point – for Race One. The start of the race was postponed several hours due to a huge storm which passed through central Florida, and it wasn’t until almost 7:00 p.m. that the green flag finally flew. The delay made no difference to Pigot. The 20-year-old from Orlando, Fla., also was unfazed by a pair of early full-course cautions, each time making exemplary restarts as he led all 17 laps. Pigot finally crossed the line 2.6892 seconds clear of young Juncos Racing teammate Kyle Kaiser.
Sunday brought more of the same. Pigot once again started from the pole and his dominance was never seriously threatened as he took the checkered flags 6.4748 seconds ahead of Kaiser.
Pigot now leads the championship standings with a 15-point margin, 65-50, over Kaiser. The next two races will be held at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama on April 26/27.
“There are still a lot of races to go so we can't get too excited yet,” affirmed Pigot. “It's a long championship. I have to thank everyone at Juncos Racing, Doug Mockett & Company, Rising Star Racing, Vitamin-D Pro App and The Stutz for making it all possible. Also, Advanced Auto Parts and Peak for coming on board for the weekend.”
