INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Rising American star Spencer Pigot has a busy season ahead of him. In addition to his primary campaign, which has brought victory in each of the first four rounds of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires for Juncos Racing, 20-year-old Pigot also will contest the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin with defending champion team Alegra Motorsports.
This exciting career opportunity stemmed from an invitation to drive a Porsche GT3 Cup car as part of the Porsche Young Drivers Academy at Barber Motorsports Park following a standout 2012 season in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. That in turn led to Pigot being invited to join Carlos de Quesada's Alegra Motorsports team for a partial campaign in last year's Canadian GT3 Cup series. A stunning debut victory followed by a pair of second-place finishes saw Pigot lead the championship points table before the priority shifted toward his open-wheel aspirations.
This year, however, a favorable schedule will allow Pigot to pursue both championships.
"We are delighted to have Spencer back in the #21 car for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Canada by Michelin," said Alegra Motorsports Team Manager Andy Greene. "This will give us a solid run for back-to-back IMSA GT3 Cup Canada Team Championships and we are aiming to secure the Driver Championship too. We would like to thank Juncos Racing in a collaborative effort for allowing Spencer to race for both championships."
Pigot will kick-off the five-event, 10-race season with a pair of races as part of the Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ont., Canada on May 17-18. The series then will move on to the challenging Calabogie Motorsports Park on June 21-22, followed by the Honda Indy Toronto in support of the Verizon IndyCar Series on July 19-20 and the iconic Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres on August 9-10 before concluding with a return to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in conjunction with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on August 30-31.
"I'm very excited to be driving for Alegra Motorsports again in the Porsche GT3 Cup Canada by Michelin championship," said Pigot. "We had a lot of success in the few races I did with them in 2013 so I'm looking forward to continuing that momentum this year. I can't thank Carlos and the team enough for the opportunity to be apart of their program. It will be exciting also to represent the team's supporters, BuyDirect Telecom and Vitalz. The Porsche GT3 Cup car is great to drive; I can't wait for Mosport."
Pigot also is proud to represent Doug Mockett & Company, Vitamin-DPro App, Rising Star Racing, California Scents, The Stutz, OMP America and RaceLite Protection in his quest for this year's Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. Prior to his seasonal Porsche debut in Canada, Pigot will return to the cockpit of Juncos Racing's Pro Mazda car for two more races later this week, May 9/10, on the reconfigured Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road course in support of the Verizon IndyCar Series at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
