CARMEL, Ind. – It was the one and only oval event of the 2023 race season and it took place this past weekend at the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park just 15 minutes from the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Closing the month of May with another podium result and three top-ten finishes, it is time to shift the focus to June and the next event at Road America.
Leading the way on the result sheets was USF2000 Presented by Cooper Tires Championship competitor Evagoras Papasavvas. Entering the weekend fourth in points while his teammate Lochie Hughes came in as the point leader, Papasavvas represented the JHDD program on the podium after turning his second-place qualifying effort into a podium result. Battling for the lead early, Papasavvas had to settle for second to add another podium result to his growing resume. Hughes, who qualified fifth, had to settle for a sixth-place result while Al Morey turned his best qualifying result of the season into a P8 result putting three Jay Howard Driver Development drivers in the top-ten.
“Great result for the USF2000 trio,” expressed Jay Howard. “Ovals are not easy, but our guys were able to keep everything clean and come home with three solid finishes and a good points haul. We now look forward to Road America, a track that we have had a lot of success at in the past.”
On the USF Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires side of the program, a talented field of oval veterans kept a pair of JHDD rookies from the results they deserved. Reece Ushijima was able to improve on a P17 qualifying effort to finish 11th, while Ricardo Escotto earned a 15th-place result when the checkered flag flew. With both drivers having the taste of a podium result earlier this month, the duo will look to repeat those performances in Wisconsin in three weeks' time.
Next up for both USF2000 and USF Pro 2000 will be a trip north to Elkhart Lake, Wis., and the famed 4.048-mile, 14-turn Road America.
