Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing started the 2015 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires season strong with a pair of victories and podium finishes in the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
In the opening rounds of the Pro Mazda Championship on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street circuit, No. 3 driver Neil Alberico claimed the pole for Race 1 and Daniel Burkett, driving the No. 2, started second. Florida Latorre, driving the No. 10, started 10th. In the 23-lap race, Alberico claimed victory, his first win in Pro Mazda.
Latorre, the 2014 USF2000 Champion, worked his way through the field to finish third, which earned him the Quartermaster Hard Charger Award. Burkett looked to finish on the podium before contact on Lap 20 sent him into the wall. He finished 14th.
In Race 2, Alberico again started on pole, Burkett started sixth and Latorre started 10th. In a repeat performance from a day earlier, Alberico dominated the race on his way to his second victory. Burkett picked up his first podium finish with a third-place finish. Latorre unfortunately was involved in an opening lap incident that ended the young Frenchman’s day early. He finished 16th.
“It’s always great to win races, especially at your home track,” said team owners Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “It was a great effort by the drivers and team, and we’re very pleased how the weekend turned out.”
The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires moves on to NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans, La., on April 10-12.
