St. Petersburg, Fla. -- St. Petersburg-based Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing is ready to tackle the 2015 Pro Mazda Presented by Cooper Tires season with a three-car assault at its home track this weekend. Drivers Neil Alberico, Daniel Burkett and Florian Latorre are focused on victory in the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
The trio of drivers will take the green flag for the first rounds of the championship on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street course on Saturday, March 28 during the Verizon IndyCar Series weekend. After making its Pro Mazda debut in 2014 and helping its drivers finish 2-3 in the championship, Cape Motorsports is hoping to add another title to its resume.
“We are very impressed with the talent our drivers this season,” said team owners Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “Obviously St. Petersburg is a track we are very familiar with, and anytime you can start the season at home is a plus. We are hoping for a great opening weekend.”
The Cape Motorsports drivers are no strangers to the Streets of St. Pete. Alberico, who finished third in the Pro Mazda Championship with the team last year, will drive the No. 3 Rising Star Racing Mazda. He posted two top-six finishes at St. Pete.
2014 USF2000 Champion Latorre, who will drive the No. 10 MazdaMotorsports.com Pro Mazda this season, had a podium finish in the USF2000 race at St. Pete last year with the team. No. 2 Granite Financial Group Inc. Pro Mazda driver Burkett had a top-five finish in last year’s USF2000 race. All three are ready for victory this season.
The drivers will take the track Friday at 8:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. for 30-minute practice sessions, followed by qualifying on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. Race 1 goes green later than day at 1:30 p.m. (40 minutes). Race 2 is scheduled for Sunday at 9:50 a.m. You can catch all the action on the Mazda Road to Indy App, available for download now.
