Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing had another impressive Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 30 – August 2. The team picked up another win at the Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio.
In Race 1, Neil Alberico started third, while Florian Latorre started sixth and Daniel Burkett started 13th. Alberico led the first two laps but was deemed to have jumped the start so had to relinquish his three-second lead to fourth-place starter Santiago Urrutia.
All three Cape drivers ran clean races and improved their positions when the checkered flag flew. Alberico finished on the podium in second, while Latorre finished fifth and Burkett finished 11th.
In Race 2, Alberico once again started second, Latorre in sixth and Burkett in 14th. After polesitter Garrett Grist was deemed to have jumped the start, Alberico was able to improve on his finish from Race 1 and pick up his fourth win of the season. Burkett also worked his way up to 12th. Late race contact with the wall relegated Latorre, who was in the sixth position, to a 17th-place finish.
“It was a tough weekend, but we’re proud of all our drivers,” said Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “It all comes down to the last races at Laguna Seca, and we will be ready.”
With only two races left, Alberico sits second in the Driver Championship, only 29 points shy of the series leader. Latorre is seventh, and Burkett is 11th. The team sits third in the standings, still in contention.
The final two rounds of the Pro Mazda Championship will take place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on September 11-13.
