Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing is pleased to announce that Daniel Burkett has joined the team for the 2015 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. Burkett will drive the No. 2.
Canadian Burkett, 19, has been racing for more than half of his life, getting his start in karting in his native Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 2011, he competed in the World Championships of Kart Racing and was named Rookie of the Year by ekartingnews.com.
In 2013 and 2014 he competed in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda racking up numerous top-five finishes. In 2014, he also competed in the Atlantic Championship Series, winning seven of the 10 events and the championship.
“My goal main goal entering 2015 is to develop my skills and learn as much as possible from the Cape brothers,” Burkett said. “They've developed so many great drivers over the years and it’s an honor to be a part of their organization. We will see what happens in my rookie year of Pro Mazda, however I'm confident that I can be in the top-five every race, fighting for the win.”
Cape Motorsports made its Pro Mazda debut in 2014, with its drivers finishing second and third in the championship and the team finishing a close second in the team title chase.
“We’re really excited to have Daniel join the team,” said Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “We initially tested Daniel for USF2000, and it was a really good test. We asked him what he thought of Pro Mazda, given his experience in USF2000 and his current Formula Atlantic Championship. He was blindingly quick during the test at Sebring, and he is ready for Pro Mazda. We can’t wait to see what he does in one of our cars.”
The Pro Mazda season will kick-off March 28-29 at the Streets of St. Petersburg.
